Updating Tumblr's Terms of Service
staff: We launched Tumblr with a boilerplate Terms of Service that we never felt truly captured our company’s philosophy.  We’re determined to be the best place for everyone in the world to share the things they love and create.  In keeping up with that motto, we felt like it was time for a little update and clarification in our Terms of Service.  Two key points: You own and control what you...

Enable Quicklook's "X-Ray Folders"
Quicklook has a hidden preference to enable “X-Ray Folders” like the one shown above. Once enabled, you can see small previews of the contents of a folder when you use Quicklook on the folder. All you have to do is run this command in the terminal: defaults write com.apple.Finder QLEnableXRayFolders 1 And then run killall Dock Once the Finder restarts, try it out. It’s...

Get song counts, lengths and sizes in iTunes 9
In older versions of iTunes, if you wanted to know the play time for a group of songs, you had to drag those songs into a new playlist. In iTunes 9, that step is no longer necessary. Simply select your songs (using any combination of click, Shift-click, and Command-click), and as your selection grows, the status display at the bottom of the iTunes window will update in real time, showing the...

An iPhone user that doesn't get it. →
From the douchey poster: The whole ‘it’s a completely new app’ argument seems like utter bullshit to me. It is still a Twitter app for **** sake. A slew of new features and functionality does not, to me, make it a different app. I don’t see anything that says this is not just a very much beefed-up, improved version of an existing app – it has the exact same ultimate purpose of making it easy...

Tweetie 2 for iPhone seeded to app store...
LorenBrichter posted about Tweetie 2.0 on the atebits website today. Excited? Stoked? Of course I am. I think a little pee came out if I’m being honest. “Making a “2.0” could have been easy. I could have changed the version number, added video tweeting and called it a day. Other apps call that “2.0” - I think it’s lame. Tweetie 1 set a new standard for Twitter clients and iPhone...

iTunes 9.0.1 killed my joy. Here's how to bring it...
“For me, one of the most welcome new features of iTunes 9 was the restoration of sanity to the way that iTunes responded to the zoom button. I had long been irritated by the non-standard behavior iTunes had displayed, brazenly flaunting the accepted practice of how the zoom button worked by toggling the mini player on and off, instead of zooming the window like a well-behaved Mac...

Does Display Size Dictate Productivity?
This report (PDF) shows some interesting info on display size, ROI etc. These are a few examples of what a 30” display can do for you: If only I had $1500 to spend on a display. It’s pretty amazing how consistent the results are. I definitely recommend downloading that PDF and giving it a once over.

A great proposal for how the dock UI should act when dragging files to the dock. This would teach people what their applications are capable of opening and, in some cases, could improve the user’s workflow. Good stuff.

FCC Backs Net Neutrality — And Then Some. →
Ryan Singel at Wired News FCC chairman Julius Genachowski delivered Monday on President Obama’s promise to back “net neutrality.” But he went much further than merely seeking to expand rules that prohibit ISPs from filtering or blocking net traffic — he proposed that they cover all broadband connections, including data connections for smartphones. Genachowski, Obama’s law school classmate,...

To all the people saying that the internet is making people closed off and unfriendly, listen to this guy. If you don’t search keywords on twitter or similar sites, answer strangers’ questions or politely report problems on the internet you’re most likely part of the problem you are complaining about. Sure, being social online is not always as good as being social in...

Run a Wired Keyboard and Mouse On An External...
sunrise: Have your Macbook open and running without any peripherals plugged in. Plug in your keyboard and mouse (or usb hub with mouse and keyboard attached to the hub). Plug in your external monitor. Close the Macbook so that it goes to sleep. Use the keyboard to awaken the Macbook. Both external keyboard and mouse should work now! This is pretty basic, but it’s something people...

Badass indeed: Hulu coming to iPhone. →
foreignplanet: According to sources, a Hulu app will come to the phone within months. Pretty much, this is awesome and will do wonders for iPhone sales (not that they need ‘em) and AT&T (who sucks and so needs ‘em.) While mobile tv watching hasn’t taken off in the past, this could be the key. Seriously, I don’t think iPhones are the blackberry killers. I think they’re mobile phone kilers...

Dropbox Trick: Making the default Mac screenshots...
kellysims: I have a little trick I use with the program Dropbox that I thought I would share. This came about after some discussion on Twitter about how some of us use Dropbox, and this was obviously more than 140 characters. Note that I am on a Mac, so you Windows users will have to figure out how to do this on your own, though I suspect it won’t be too different really. By default, Macs are...

Apple vs. Microsoft: a website usability study →
Microsoft just doesn’t have a consistent, coherent and unified brand. Every section looks and feels different. There is no global navigation and there are not many visual clues that tell the user that this is a Microsoft site — unlike Apple, where the whole site shares one unique aesthetic that mirrors that of their hardware and software, thus creating a powerful brand. For these reasons, I think...

Whoa, Grooveshark for iPhone would be nice, huh?
I found these screenshots over at patdryburgh.com Be sure and click over there and be on the lookout for news on this. He seems to have an inside scoop… If the app gets app store approval, I’m sure it will rise to become a top application pretty quickly. Hell, I’ll pay for this if I have to

Mac-using Facebook fans are going to be happy to learn about Facebook’s experimental Desktop Notifications app. Desktop Notifications sits in the menu bar, and pops up notifications (using Growl if you have it) when they occur. It also gives you quick access to your news feed, profile page, and quick ways to update your status or start a new Facebook email message. (via TUAW) Facebook is...

iPhone MMS is Coming 9.25.09 →
AT&T admits they’re late, saying “it was important to give our customers a positive experience from day one” so they needed the extra to “to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic.” Which I think means if MMS doesn’t work, everybody can ream the shit out of them for it. At least it’s free. (via...
